Norway proposes Deca-BDE as a candidate Persistent Organic Pollutant

On 27 May Norway submitted a proposal to list Deca-BDE[1] as a Persistent Organic Pollutant (POP) under the Stockholm Convention[2].

The proposal[3] has been verified by the Stockholm Convention Secretariat to contain all the information required by the Convention to be considered as a candidate POP and has been forwarded to the Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee (POPRC).

The POPRC is the scientific expert committee that will review if Deca-BDE meets the criteria to be considered a POP. The next POPRC[4] meeting will take place from 14-18 October 2013 in Rome where the proposal to nominate Deca-BDE as a POP will be discussed.

This development does not have any immediate legal impact on the manufacturing, use and marketing of Deca-BDE. If Deca-BDE is found to be POP at the earliest it would be listed in 2017.
